Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
As Durga Puja festivities envelop West Bengal, the state's cultural celebration is increasingly becoming a political battleground for rival parties, the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Both parties view the annual puja as a platform to bolster their public relations and expand their political influence in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The Trinamool Congress, currently in power, has announced grants for numerous community pujas and is actively engaging with the public by setting up book stalls and health camps at various pandals. However, this move has drawn criticism for allegedly exploiting religious sentiments using state funds.
On the other hand, the BJP has invited prominent leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President J.P. Nadda, to inaugurate multiple community pujas in the state. The party has extended financial assistance to over 400 puja committees without state government support and is making efforts to introduce politics in West Bengal. In a symbolic gesture, a replica of the under-construction temple in Ayodhya was displayed at a puja site by BJP leader Sajal Ghosh. While Trinamool leader Saugata Roy emphasized Durga Puja's cultural significance, he acknowledged that it serves as a channel for both parties to connect with the common people.
